Effective schools are strengthening subject-matter content in English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and the arts through an integrated curriculum with strong basic skills instruction. The future demands individuals who are critical thinkers and adept problem-solvers. They must be able to assess and organize information, make informed decisions, and become life-long learners. As we prepare Diplomat students for the future, our classrooms must provide students with real-life experiences. Diplomat teachers actively engage students in interdisciplinary projects, cooperative learning activities, and problem centered learning activities that result in real-life outcomes while instructing basic skills. Our academically focused school-wide theme offers activities that integrate our curriculum, and our entire curriculum is in line with and driven by the State of Florida Sunshine State Standards.

Language Arts instruction is the cornerstone of our curriculum. The reading-writing connection is recognized in Language Arts and throughout the entire curriculum. Students learn to read as writers as they identify story elements in literature. At Diplomat, teachers apply a variety of strategies that students can use to strengthen their reading comprehension and writing ability. Additionally, students participate in regularly scheduled Media classes under the instruction of our full-time Media Specialist. Writing instruction emphasizes the process of composing (planning, drafting, revising, sharing, and publishing). Technology is used throughout the process from planning to publication.
The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Standards for School Mathematics provide a foundation for the mathematics curriculum at Diplomat. Our study of mathematics engages students in problem solving, communication, reasoning and making mathematical connections. Teachers provide students with a variety of activities that promote the ability to solve realistic problems. Technology is used in the classroom and computer lab to aid students in solving realistic problems, investigating patterns, and exploring procedures.
Students completing our elementary school program will know the basic history of our nation, state, community and the diversity of cultures in theses areas. They will understand economic fundamentals of the free enterprise system, locate geographically the continents, oceans and major nations of the world. Students will be exposed to historical documents to comprehend democratic freedoms and justice. Our students will exhibit independence, citizenship, peacemaking skills, and an understanding and respect for the differences among individuals.
Diplomat's approach to science instruction incorporates real-life experiences. Our students go to the beach to learn about the sea; to Mote Marine to learn about manatees and other sea animals; to the Nature Center to learn about native plants and animals; and to the County recycling plant to learn about conservation. Environmental education is an important component of our science curriculum. Diplomat teachers make science interesting, enjoyable, and relevant. Activities and projects support students' curiosity about their world. Science is taught through curriculum integration rather than in isolation.
The students are exposed to art and music through weekly classes taught by specialists in these areas. Appreciation for the arts is fostered by the specialists as they expose the children to various styles, artists, and mediums. Classroom teachers and specialists communicate regularly to assure integration of the arts with curriculum studies. All students participate in one of the six musical productions which are presented to the student body and parents. These performances are a coordinated effort between the music, art, and classroom teachers.
